The unions COPROMA and Dadin-Kowa aim to substitute gari imports in the Dosso BoP markets, with locally produced gari. They plan to do this by increasing cassava production and processing, and establishing a more efficient distribution system. They aim to provide low income consumers in Nigeria with cassava products at competitive and affordable prices comparable to imported products. Special attention will be paid to gender by the inclusion of women and youth in the gari value chain. The union also wants to strengthen the technical capacities of small cassava producers and women's mini-processing units.

About the Business champion

The union is made up of two organizations, the Dadin-Kowa and COPROMA. The first one is a producer and processors cassava farmer organization created in 2014. It processes cassava into various products such as, gari, tapioca, flour and starch. The latter cooperative of cassava producers in Niger (COPROMA) is a peasant organization created in 2014 in Dosso. COPROMA has 300 members including 25% of women who cultivate around 5,000 ha of cassava.

Key interventions

Development of processing by training 2,000 women in techniques to process cassava into gari, tapioca, attiéké and flour in the region of Dosso.

Training of women processors groups per localities (villages) which will be provided with processing equipment.

Development of distribution to BoP markets to replace those from imports for local BoP markets.

Establishment of an efficient distribution network system to increase the proximity of the product to targeted BoP consumers.

Increasing agricultural production and productivity through the introduction of new high-yielding varieties and the development of marginal lands.

Development of strong relationships between potential partners to create well-organized and sustainable value chains.
