HPW Fresh & Dry Fruits is a medium-sized company in Ghana drying tropical fruits that are exported to Switzerland and distributed from there to several supermarkets in Europe. From its inception, HPW made a deliberate choice to source its raw materials requirements from medium and smallholder farmers. The partnership between HPW and 2SCALE aims at securing HPW’s sourcing of mango and pineapple by strengthening the capacity of SHFs in productivity, quality supplies and organizational cohesiveness.

Achievements

Build the capacity of farmers in good agricultural practices and post-harvest handling

Set up a Spraying Service Provider scheme (partnership CropLife)

Support varietal change on old orchards on trial basis

Support POs in acquiring necessary machine on a loan basis and managing of a machine pool for hiring to farmers

Upgrade processing lines at the factory

Facilitate EDAIF support for 3 POs

Targets:

The partnership aims to support 2000 smallholder farmers (500 women) to develop the skills and competencies needed to link to the vegetable/ fresh fruit industry and to include 12 SMEs (3 female-headed). The volume that is anticipated by the lead partner equals 6,000 tons per annum of mango and 6,000 tons per annum of pineapple by 2017.
