Kenya’s annual demand for soybean exceeds 100,000 tons, the highest in the East African region. However annual soy production has never exceeded 5,000 tons bringing a deficit of over 95%. With a huge gap in local production, this partnership presents a unique opportunity towards building local inclusive production capacities among farmers that will over time replace imports. In addition, soybean has a high potential to contribute to the food and nutrition goals of the 2SCALE program, especially for BoP consumers. It is an affordable source of protein that significantly can contribute to improving the income of small farmers, and engagement of small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those led by women and youth.
